John Blackwell was appointed Honorary Consul for Malaysia in 2008. As a professional forester, he has visited Malaysia inspecting native forests, palm oil plantations, national park reserves, and the emerging eco-tourism opportunities in Malaysia. His respect for the country and admiration for the work ethic of Malaysians led him to the Honorary Council position.
Blackwell is committed to public service in Oregon. Currently he is Chairman of the Oregon Board of Forestry and is President of Cycle Oregon. He sits on the board of directors of the World Forestry Center after having served 27 years as president and CEO of that organization. He also served as Chairman of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission.
Malaysia, Oregon's fifth largest trading partner, is a progressive country with a strong middle class, a devotion to education, and possesses a keen understanding of the value of its native forests.
